Whole Brain Hypnotherapy — Why I Speak to Both Minds in Every Session

There is a common belief about hypnotherapy that I want to address right at the start.

The deeper you go, the more powerful the session.

It sounds logical. And it is completely wrong.

Depth of trance is not the goal. Change is. And after 25 years of working with thousands of clients I can tell you that some of the most profound shifts I have witnessed happened with people who never went particularly deep at all.

People go to the depth that is right for them

Some people naturally drop into a very deep state of hypnosis. Others stay lighter, aware of everything being said, following along with their conscious mind fully present. Both are completely valid. Both can produce real results.

What matters is not how deep someone goes. It is what happens while they are there.

Trying to push someone into a deeper state than their system is ready for does not produce better results. It breaks rapport. And rapport is everything when it comes to subconscious change. When someone does not feel safe with you their subconscious will not let you in. It is that simple.

This is one of the reasons I always offer a free consultation before working with anyone. If we are not a good fit the work simply will not land the way it needs to.

The conscious mind never actually leaves the room

Here is something most people do not realize about hypnosis.

Even in a hypnotic state the conscious mind is still present. Still listening. Still evaluating what is being said. For most people, especially the analytical ones, the logical mind is right there the whole time, quietly deciding whether what it is hearing is true.

A lot of hypnotherapy treats the conscious mind as an inconvenience to be bypassed. Get the person deep enough and the conscious mind steps aside and the suggestions slip through.

That is not how I work.

I work with both minds simultaneously. That is the core of what I call Whole Brain Hypnotherapy.

Speaking to the conscious mind

The conscious mind understands logic, reasoning, and language. It evaluates what it hears and looks for holes. It needs to be convinced, not bypassed.

So I build what I call hypnotic argument into every session. A carefully constructed, personalized case drawn entirely from the client's own history and experience that the conscious mind simply cannot dispute. Every time the conscious mind hears something and thinks yes, that is true, that makes sense, it primes the subconscious to accept what comes next.

When the conscious mind is nodding along, the door opens.

Speaking to the subconscious mind

The subconscious mind does not respond to logic. It responds to imagery, metaphor, story, and repetition. It is in many ways like a child, absorbing what it is shown and told through experience and feeling rather than through reasoning.

This is why I use story and metaphor alongside logical argument in my sessions. The hypnotic argument speaks to the conscious mind. The imagery and metaphor speak to the subconscious. Both minds receive what they need in the language they actually understand.

Why suggestions alone are not enough

Early in my practice I had a weight loss client who asked me to simply suggest she eat smaller portions. So I did. And she gained weight after every session.

When we went deeper we found that as a child she had watched her grandmother get thinner and thinner in hospice until she died. Her subconscious had made a connection her conscious mind had never considered. Thin meant dying. Every suggestion I gave her about eating less was landing on a subconscious that believed getting smaller could kill her.

It was protecting her the only way it knew how.

Once we found that association and addressed it directly, speaking to both the logical mind and the subconscious in the language each one understood, everything changed.

You cannot bypass the subconscious into doing something it believes is dangerous. You cannot override a deep association with surface level suggestion. You have to find the root, understand what the subconscious has been trying to do, and speak to it in a way that actually reaches it.

That is what Whole Brain Hypnotherapy does.

What this means for you

When you work with me you will not be put into a deep state and have affirmations whispered at you. You will be met exactly where you are. Both parts of your mind will be involved in the work. Everything will be personalized to your specific history, your specific associations, and the specific reason your subconscious has been running the pattern you want to change.

The depth of your trance does not determine your results. The quality of the conversation we have with your whole mind does.
