Why You Keep Doing Things You Don't Want to Do — Your Subconscious Mind Explained

A glowing golden brain surrounded by question marks against a dark background, representing the mystery of the subconscious mind and human behavior.

Why Your Subconscious Mind Keeps Running the Show

You know exactly what you want to change.

Maybe it is the way you eat when you are stressed. The way you shut down in certain conversations. The pattern that keeps showing up in your relationships no matter how many times you have promised yourself it would be different this time. The habit you have quit a dozen times and somehow always come back to.

You are not lacking motivation. You are not weak. You understand the problem perfectly well and you genuinely want things to be different.

And yet here you are again.

If this sounds familiar, there is something important I want you to understand. Something that changes the way most people think about their own behavior once they hear it.

The part of your mind you use to make decisions, set goals, and have conversations with yourself about what you want to change represents somewhere between five and ten percent of your total mental activity.

The other ninety to ninety five percent is your subconscious mind. And it is running the show.

What the subconscious mind actually does

Your subconscious mind has been with you since before you were born. It is your long term memory, storing every experience you have ever had. It generates every emotion you feel. It runs every automatic behavior in your body, from keeping your heart beating to the way you drive a familiar route without consciously thinking about it.

It is also the part of your mind that formed every belief you hold about yourself and the world. Most of those beliefs were formed before you were eight or nine years old, before your logical mind was even fully developed, through the messages you received, the experiences you had, and the conclusions your young mind drew from all of it.

And here is the part that explains so much.

The subconscious does not update on its own. It forms a belief or a behavior pattern and it runs it loyally, indefinitely, until it is given a reason to do something different. It does not matter that you have consciously decided you want to change. The subconscious did not get that memo. It is still running the program it formed years or decades ago because as far as it is concerned that program is keeping you safe.

Why the subconscious is so hard to override

Think about the last time you tried to change something through willpower alone.

You made a decision. You committed to it. You were genuinely motivated. And for a while it worked. And then something happened, a stressful day, a triggering situation, a moment of vulnerability, and the old pattern came roaring back as though the decision you made had never existed.

That is not weakness. That is the subconscious doing its job.

Your conscious decision to change something is like a note left on the fridge. Your subconscious is the entire operating system running underneath. The note on the fridge does not rewrite the operating system. It just sits there while the system keeps doing what it has always done.

This is why people can understand their patterns completely, can trace them back to exactly where they started, can articulate with perfect clarity why they do what they do, and still feel completely unable to stop doing it.

Understanding something is a conscious process. But the pattern does not live in the conscious mind. It lives in the subconscious. And those two parts of the mind are not automatically in communication with each other.

What the subconscious is trying to do

Here is something that surprises most people when they first hear it.

The subconscious is not working against you. Even when a pattern looks completely self destructive from the outside, the subconscious has a reason for running it. There is always a positive intention underneath, always something it is trying to protect you from or provide for you, even when the method it is using is causing you harm.

The person who cannot stop eating when they are anxious is not weak. Their subconscious learned at some point that food was comfort, that it reliably produced a feeling of safety or calm, and it has been reaching for that solution ever since.

The person who keeps ending up in the same kind of relationship is not making bad choices. Their subconscious has a template for what feels familiar, what feels like home, and it moves toward that template automatically even when the conscious mind knows perfectly well it is not good for them.

The person who self sabotages every time they get close to success is not afraid of success exactly. Their subconscious has an association between success and something threatening, maybe visibility, maybe loss of relationships, maybe a belief that they do not deserve it, and it pulls them back to keep them safe.

The subconscious is always trying to help. It is just working with old information.

What actually creates change

Real lasting change happens when the subconscious is part of the conversation.

Not when we talk about the pattern endlessly from the outside. Not when we apply willpower and discipline to override it temporarily. But when we go to the part of the mind that is actually running the pattern and give it new information. Help it understand that the threat it has been protecting against is no longer current. Show it that there are better ways to meet the need it has been trying to meet all along.

That is what hypnotherapy does.

In a hypnotherapy session we access the subconscious directly, in a state where it is receptive and available, and we have the conversation that creates genuine change. We find out what the subconscious has been trying to do, why it formed the pattern it formed, and what it needs to understand in order to update it.

When the subconscious gets that update, the pattern shifts. Not because you are trying harder or being more disciplined. Because the part of your mind that was running the old program has been given a reason to run a new one.

That is a completely different experience from everything you have tried before.
